Sankujitsu The 'Three-harmony-art'
What is 'three-harmony'? What does it mean?
The Sankujitsu badge and basic philosophy is an extension of 'Sankukai', meaning 'three-harmony-school'. Sankukai is a system developed by Yoshinao Nanbu, based on the idea of unity or 'harmony' between an attacker and an intended victim. Hence the Sankukai logo is a depiction of the Earth, Moon & Sun represented in a harmonious existence.
What are the 'three-harmonies' or 'elements' of Sankujitsu?
1. Centre-line. An attacker will place their victim on their centreline - a plane directly in front of the attacker.
2. Distance. An attacker will place their victim at a distance to whatever suits them, dependant on their technique of choice. i.e.
a 'kicker' will place their target at kicking distance.
a 'puncher' will place their target at punching distance.
a 'grappler' will want to be about eighteen inches away.
3. Time. The attacker will strike at a calculated point in time once the victim has been placed at an optimum distance and position.
If any of these variables are disrupted there will not exist a state of harmony and an attack will fail.
Elements 1, 2 & 3 can be controlled by an evasive technique known as 'tai-sabaki'. A student of Sankujitsu a "sankujitsuka" is encouraged to utilise and master tai-sabaki from the outset. |
